Libraries in the digital age
This article in the New York Times (which, btw, really does a great job covering technology, arts and culture!) describes the changes that are happening to some U.S. libraries after computers and Net connections were installed. Some very relevant stuff here: they have attracted many new visitors, a lot more minors and 'digital divide' - dwellers, and that's a good thing. I think that it is IMPERATIVE that libraries are ubiquitously connected to the Net, at all locations, and allow everyone to use that access for free, and for anything they want to. I think that a lot of kids use the computer as a stepping stone to reading books, and this is a crucial twist. I don't think that computers will ever diminish the power of books, but rather, they will become another option next to the digital services - and one that I think will grow, too. As to MUSIC, I think the libaries should offer burning stations for stuff that people can download while they are there --- that would be a great way to promote music. Go to the next public library, log in, and get a few songs for free... but yes, I forgot.... the almighty copyright police.
