free music from mobygratis.com: less control > bigger audience

Moby is getting this right: film music | mobygratis.com. Way to go Moby!

film music

"this portion of moby.com, 'film music', is for independent and non-profit filmmakers, film students, and anyone in need of free music for their independent, non-profit film, video, or short. to use the site you log in(or on?) and are then given a password. you can then listen to the available music and download whatever you want to use in your film or video or short. the music is free as long as it's being used in a non-commercial or non-profit film, video, or short...|"

hi gerd, i'm wondering if you think the process in which to gain a license to moby's songs is a bit laborious for the average musician who wants to do something similar?

should licenses be granted more liberally like in a traditional Creative Commons/Archive.org style?

or is this the wave of the future, granting free licenses but also requiring better details as to how the music will be used.

i personally believe that moby's done a good thing cause now people wont just grab these songs and use them for videos that he doesn't support, but i'm curious to hear your opinion. also because for the average musician, this system is not really possible to implement without the help of a third party.

great to hear you speak at last year's CMW, hope you come back to toronto again soon.
