New Media - What’s next for content and creativity (Audio from the RSA event on April 8, 2009)

Picture 57 I just found this audio stream (below) via a link to Gravity Lab Media; the RSA event on April 8 was great so it's worth blogging on it again.  A reminder of the topics that were discussed: "The internet is fundamentally disrupting the traditional mainstream content distribution and selling models, starting with music and games, followed by TV, film, books and print publishing. Soon everyone will be “always on”, mobile and hyper-connected, and everything will available all the time. How will content be created, distributed, marketed, consumed, and paid for? Who will do what, for whom, and how will the traditional players such as broadcasters, record labels, publishers and distributors adjust to the new landscape? If new players, starting with telecoms, device makers, advertisers and brands, indeed move into the content business, what will be their challenges and opportunities? Given the challenging financial climate, how do we reconcile the need to reward enterprise and secure sustainable revenue streams, with the expectations and demands of the “freeconomics” generation..."

Speakers: Gerd Leonhard, media futurist, author and blogger; Richard Titus, Controller of Future Media, Audio, Music & Mobile, BBC; David A. Smith, chief executive of Global Futures and Foresight (GFF).

My "Music 2.0" book is now available in Croatian language - free PDF, too!

Glazba 2.0 COVER  The amazing power of online networking and collaboration, open platforms, creative commons licensing and crowd-sourcing (whew... that's a mouthful!) has manifested itself once again: for the past 9 months, the tenacious and dedicated Zvonimir Dusper (Dus) from Croatia (LinkedIn profile) has been hard at work translating my entire Music 2.0 book into Croatian language (see the English book site here, download the English version as a PDF here, buy the dead-tree version or U.S. letter size book PDF at Lulu, here, visit the Amazon.com book page [incl. reviews] here).

The book is now available as a free PDF download and in a print version via Zvonimir's Glazba2.0 site - check it out and please forward this post to anyone that may be interested in reading Music2.0 in Croatian  (you can use the tools provided, below)Picture 24

To receive the free PDF please use the email box on the left site of the Glazba2.0 site (see here >). Enjoy!

PREDGOVOR HRVATSKOM IZDANJU
Tematika “2.0” u posljednje vrijeme sve više okupira medije (nove i stare :-), pa smo, osim već razvikanim Webom 2.0, sad bombardirani i Novinarstvom 2.0, Marketingom (komercijalnim ali i političkim!) 2.0, Ekonomijom 2.0, Sociologijom 2.0 i drugim raznim inačicama tog fenomena, među kojima nas, ljubitelje glazbe i/ili glazbene pr ofesionalce, najviše zanima upravo tema ove knjige – Glazba

Picture 26

Announcing a new video show with fellow Futurist Glen Hiemstra: WhereIsItGoing (WiiG)

Picture 14  I just started this exciting new Video Show with my friend and fellow Futurist Glen Hiemstra (Futurist.com), in Seattle, Washington.  We will be recording a new episode every week, on a current topic. The shows will be between 5 and 10 minutes long, and we will try to get to the bottom lines as quickly as possible, giving each topic a quick futuristic angle (whatever that means;)

Glen and me have collaborated many times before, including the Futuretalk podcast & video series, and DVD (feel free to download the whole thing via Mininova, if you're interested). We also do think-tanks together - feel free to ping us if you're interested.

We are currently using Skype video recording and it works ok, but there is apparently no way to get better backgrounds integrated into the actual recording, quite yet - so if you have any better idea, please let us know.  We are both Mac users, so we tried iChat which was cool - clouds and orbits in the background - but we could not get the audio to sync reasonably well with the video once we started recording (using Screenflow or Screentoaster) - not so good!

Visit the WhereIsItGoing website for more details or subscribe to the iTunes video-podcast feed here on Blip.tv (great for offline use).  Hope you like it!

All my short blog posts will now move to Twitter. If you get my blog feed be sure to subscribe to my Twitter RSS feed, too

Really, REALLY BIG RSS feed buttonImage by photopia / HiMY SYeD via Flickr

I used to blog short stuff all the time - usually a link to a great story or resource somewhere else, and maybe add a few comments. That was then, and this is now: this kind of activity has now almost completely moved to my Twitter account (main) (others: FuturefeedDailyWisdoms), because it makes a lot more sense there. Blog posts will be a bit less but more substantial and more carefully crafted - as they should be, imho.

So, if you are already subscribing to this blog's RSS feed but have not been sucked into the Twitter universe quite yet - and don't really want to (yes, I know you people are still out there!) - please be sure to also subscribe to my Twitter RSS feed, as well as my Friendfeed RSS, that way you can be sure you keep getting all the goodies, regardless of what you use. Both of those RSS feeds can still be read even if you are not logged-in to either of them. Hope that helps?

Read my best 2008 blog posts and essays on your iPhone

Picture 22 I have blogged about this before, but here's a quick reminder that you can now read my best 2008 blog posts and essays on your iPhone, online or offline.  Just get the great Instapaper reading app (there's a free one, and a premium one which I very much recommend), register with Instapaper and add this page to your 'read later' list. Then, sync your iphone to download the content so that you can read offline. Great stuff! Instapaper reduced my printing costs by 90% already. If you want to download the PDF, instead, please go to my Free Content page.

Interview & Podcast on Telcos/ISPs and Content 2.0 (prior to speaking at the Emerging Communications Conference next week)

Picture 10 Media Futurist on Telcos/ISPs and Content 2.0 - Emerging Communications Blog.

A week last Monday Lee Dryburgh, Founder of the eComm Conference interviewed me via Skype. You can download it as a 96kbps MP3 via the event's blog, above (24.1 meg, 37 minutes). Additionally the full transcript is there as well. I am speaking at this conf on WED March 3, 4.30 pm, and will be posting my presentation shortly afterwards -stay tuned.

The Future of Content & Telecoms: Flat Rate Content Bundles and Social Media - the Next Big Thing?

Gerd Leonhard, Media Futurist, MediaFuturist.com

Date: Wednesday, March 4  Time: 4:30 - 4:50 PM Location: Salon E

Imagine a world where unfiltered and limitless access to content is bundled directly into your access to the networks. A world where 'your cloud' holds all kinds of content, your social network connections, your community, and your context (i.e. meta-content), your meta-data and your interaction-trails, and where access to all of this is feels-like-free, legal, always-on and fully mobile, on any and all platforms. This is the future we are heading into, and telecoms, content-owners and brands / advertisers must forge entirely new partnerships.  We are starting to see content creators and rights-owners aborting their long-standing quests for total control, and instead looking to build their audiences and share revenues. So where is this trend going to take us, what do we need to do in order to turn content (music, video, TV, news, games, books...) into a new and truly growing business that is really web-native, where are the big opportunities for telecoms, operators, social networks and rights-holders, and what will the new business models look like? In this context, Gerd will also address topics such as the flat rate for digital music, ISP/Operator + Content bundling examples in Europe and Asia, copyright 2.0 and the future of content commerce, the shift from control-economy to attention &  trust economy, the latest developments in next generation advertising, and the growing economic power of those 'new generatives' (> Kevin Kelly).

My column on The Future of Music, in the Musikmarkt magazine (German language)

Picture 68 The German music industry magazine "Der Musikmarkt" ran a colum with an interview with me, last week. Here is the PDF (in German language). I am addressing the need for the industry to generate new revenue streams that are not based on COPY but on ACCESS. If you speak German...enjoy:  Download Leonhard_072009

Compensation not Control - The Future of Music: video & audio versions of my presentation at MidemNet 2009 (*one of my best ;)

Finally, here is the video and audio version of my presentation at MidemNet 2009, in Cannes France. I put a ton of work into this presentation and, well, honestly... I think it's one of the best I have ever done on this topic.  Hope you enjoy it - and please comment, below, and / or spread the word!  Thanks to the Midem organization for providing the DVD with this video.

The topics: why the music industry needs to license the Internet just like it has licensed Radio (i.e. with a collective license), why criminalizing the users & fans will not work - and why those efforts should be re-directed to the creation of a new 'Music 2.0' ecosystem that actually produces growing revenues, where those new revenues will come from, and how the music flat rate - aka music like water - would work. See my previous blog post for more details and the PDF of this presentation. The MidemNet blog is here. My free book, Music 2.0, is here, btw;)

Trip sharing site Dopplr sends out first annual report on my travel habits: way cool!

Picture 27 Dopplr rocks!  The free service allows you to publish and share your travels with others, get input from people who have also been there (hotels, restaurants etc) and maybe meet with people in your network that are also be close-by. I have been using it for some time now (albeit not nearly enough) and it is become very valuable, indeed. I have met some very nice people this way, while reconnecting with others that are in my network but have been 'dormant'.

So today, the Dopplr people topped it all by sending me a free report with some very juicy morsels of information about my travel habits and history (see some excerpts below). These numbers are even scarier than I thought since I did not even share all trips with Dopplr, during 2008, but still - great intel to have. Keep it up, guys!
