Gerd Leonhard aka MediaFuturist is a futurist, keynote speaker, author and CEO of TheFuturesAgency, based in Switzerland. He is (mostly) a proponent of what he calls 'The Networked Society', the SoLoMo internet (social, local, mobile) and freemium business models; and foresees great opportunities in the global empowerment of creators and consumers powered by digital technology. Andrew and Gerd will present some of their key insights for approx. 10-15 minutes each, and will then debate the most crucial issues such as what privacy means in a connected world, whether 'the crowds' are actually being empowered or not, what the future role of social media will be, what the true meaning of a networked society is, and what the media landscape will look like, in the future.

Change is becoming much faster now (the suddenly-off-the-cliff effect)

This graph, below, reflects a growing trend and interesting phenomena that I have observed with many business that are impacted by the dramatically accelerating disruption brought on by digital technologies. For many incumbents, it may often look like 'things will be OK, regardless (i.e. we still sell a lot of XYZ - why worry)' but when a certain pivot point is actually reached (as below, in US newspaper ad revenues, around 2006), the entire business logic suddenly falls off the cliff, at which point it is often too late to still re-invent from a position of strength.

The lessons: foresight is crucial, and should be part of everyone's job. Look for likely change when your business is still doing well. Anticipate disruptions.

There are many good points in this really excellently researched piece - pretty embarrassing for the 'land of the free' I might add. Quite worrisome, in fact.

Over the past two decades, the United States has established one of the harshest systems of copyright enforcement in the world. Our domestic copyright law has become broader (it covers more topics), deeper (it lasts for a longer time), and more severe (the punishments for infringement have been getting worse). These standards were established through an alphabet soup of legislation: the No Electronic Theft (NET) Act of 1997, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) of 1998, and the Prioritizing Resources and Organization for Intellectual Property (PRO-IP) Act of 2008. And every few years, there’s a call for more..."

Jeremy Rifkin videos: the empathic civilization, and the third industrial revolution. Must watch!

I have been busy reThirs industrial Rifkin ading Jeremy Rifkin's amazing book The Third Industrial Revolution as well as his other writings (check out his Huffington Post pieces), and wanted to share some of his key videos and resources with you.

His current, and maybe most important topic is the coming convergence of Internet technology and digital communications with energy and environmental issues - the idea of an Internet of Energy. Because of my recent expansion into what I call GreenFutures this concept has really struck a chord with me.

Jeremy Rifkin is president of the Foundation on Economic Trends and the author of seventeen bestselling books on the impact of scientific and technological changes on the economy, the workforce, society, and the environment. One of the most popular social thinkers of our time, Rifkin is the bestselling author of The European Dream, The Hydrogen Economy, The Age of Access, The Biotech Century, and The End of Work.

New audio / video interview on the future of branding, business and the Internet (incl. some comments on SOPA), via TribeRadio

A few days ago, I did a fairly lengthy and deep skype interview with Toronto-based Marie Germain from Branding 2.0 (see her Twitter channel here), touching on many issues including the future of commerce, selling, marketing and branding, so-called social media (I much prefer the term Social OS), current issues in technology and the Internet (such as SOPA - the deeply disturbing but nevertheless impending U.S. Stop Online Piracy Act), and media / content trends.

There are some quite juicy snippets in this interview, such as:

"In an truly digital society we probably don't need marketing as we know it"

"We are moving from a society, and an economy, based on EGOsystems to a society that is based on ECOsystems (i.e. INTERDEPENDENCE)"

"The old days of commerce were based on handcuffing consumers, now it's all about attraction, engagement and conversations (being a magnet rather than using handcuffs)"

Jeffrey Sachs "The Price of Civilization" - great video to kick off 2012

In this very insightful Authors-at-Google-video Jeffrey Sachs, Director of The Earth Institute at Columbia University, aptly summarizes several key topics such as the reasons for the economic crisis, the increasing inequality in America, and the consequences of globalization.

Announcing my new Kindle book "The Future of Content"

FoC Gerd LeonahrdToday is a very big day for me. My new Kindle book "The Future of Content" just went online at Amazon, and is already gaining a lot of traction. You can view a very short video greeting about the book on my GerdTube channel (Youtube:) 

Of course I would be very happy if you would consider buying the book for yourself (only $3.90, Kindle-only) but beyond that it would be really great if you could help me spread the word via rating and / or 'liking' the book on the Amazon.com page, tweeting about it or just forwarding this mail to some friends that may be interested.
